This is the second, and much anticipated, solo exhibition of work by Niamh O’Malley at Green on Red Gallery. O’Malley’s practice is an investigation into the visual tension which occurs at the conjunction of the still, painted image and the real-time filmic space. Her work consists of video film projected onto painted canvases. Short, silent films loop continually to present small, everyday observed scenarios which are then interrupted or transformed through the painted surface they appear on. This exhibition will consist of approximately three works.
The tension of O’Malley’s work lies in the animation (the video) of a still space (the canvas) and the viewers’ attempts to reconcile themselves to the act of resolving the contrasts. O’Malley’s pieces are instantly mesmerising. Each piece is intensely luminous; the result of the projected image moving over the painted canvas is that each work operates as a space where the viewer constructs his/her fictive understanding of a still environment that merges with a ‘real’, albeit historical activity. As figures actively appear and depart through the painted elements, their impermanence, their temporality is enhanced.
In an essay for a forthcoming publication in association with Palazzo delle Papesse in Siena, Maeve Connolly writes, “the structure and form …emphasises the extent to which the individuals remain detached from the spaces they pass through. As one loop gives way to the next, as figures return again to animate their static landscapes, it becomes apparent that most will never be fully present in these places.”
Most recently O’Malley has exhibited in VOLTA Show 02, Basle, in Galerie Baumet Sultana, Paris, Esoterick Collection of Modern Italian Art, London, Palazzo delle Papesse, Siena and she is currently a nominee for the inaugural Irish American Arts Awards, New York.
The artist will give a talk on her work in the Dublin City Gallery the Hugh Lane, Sunday 24th September 2006 at 3pm. All are welcome.
