Green On Red Gallery is delighted to announce Still Even, a solo exhibition of new work by Nigel Rolfe, including new video and photographic works.

While the title suggests a pervasive calm and rest, the reality is a world riven with destruction and decay, like the title : nature morte ( " still even " in Dutch ).

The viewer is confronted with sound and walls of strong colour and black and white imagery mostly of plants seen or held at close range. The German photographer Karl Blossfeldt comes to mind but you can't help feeling the human story, the environmental cost, the unnecessary waste of life, the irony of the beauty.

At the heart of Rolfe’s practice lies a central conviction : art is not valuable for what it leaves behind, but for what it makes possible in the immediacy of the live moment — directly before the eyes of the beholder.

Nigel Rolfe ( b. 1950, Isle of Wight ) is celebrated internationally for his precise, risk-taking and deeply poetic live works where the body and elemental materials — earth, stone, water, sound — meet in acts of tension, fragility and transformation. His performances have defined a language of immediacy and presence, shaping performance art as both a practice and a philosophy.
